Fun facts about sleep you probably did not know.

 

    1. We sleep a third of our lives. That means, by the age of 60 we have spend 20 years asleep.
    2. Meanwhile two thirds of a cat's life is spend asleep.
    3. Koalas sleep around 20 hours a day and are at risk to die from exhaustion if they sleep too little.
    4. The record of the longest period without sleep is 11 days and 25 minutes.
    5. Sea otters hold hands while they sleep so they don't drift away from each otter.
    6. Somniphobia is the fear of falling asleep.
    7. Whales and dolphins literally fall half asleep. Each side of their brains takes turns so they can come up for air.
    8. Clinomania is the irresistible urge to stay cozy in bed all day (who can't relate?).
    9. Dysania is that feeling when you just woke up and really don't want to leave the bed.
    10. Chimpanzee sleep on their own arms in order to rest their head and neck.
    11. Pillows were first used for diseased people, to keep bad spirits away.
    12. Sleep deprivation will kill you more quickly than food deprivation.
    13. It is not uncommon for deaf people to use sign language while they dream.
    14. The perfect nap, according to NASA, lasts 26 minutes.
    15. Hippos can sleep underwater. They just let themselves sink to the bottom of the lake with their weight of up to 4.5 tons. A reflex allows them to bob up, take a breath and sink down again without waking up.
    16. Pain tolerance is reduced by sleep deprivation.
    17. It’s impossible to sneeze while sleeping.
    18. If you are snoring, you are not dreaming. 
    19. The ability to remember dreams vanishes quickly: we forget 50% in the first 5 minutes after waking up and 90% in the following 5 minutes.
